Most of his thinking comes from mathematical theories that he develops. When he is in this mode he usually wears glasses and pulls his hair back.
He's also fiercely loyal to Tsuna to the point that his ambition is to become his right hand man. He thinks highly of him to the point that he'll go to extremes for him.[/style]

He was the youngest child, the oldest being his older half-sister Bianchi. His sister's mother was the one married to their father, Hayato's being a talented and beautiful pianist, by the name of Lavina, that their father fell in love with. He had an affair with Lavina, who gave birth to Hayato. However, no illegitimate children are accepted within the mafia, and so everyone, including him, believed he was the son of his actual wife, and Bianchi's full brother.
Lavina was allowed to see him three times a year. She encouraged him to learn and play the piano, which he did. He became exceedingly good at it, a very talented piano player. On one of his birthdays, he waited excitedly for Lavina to come over, even though he didn't know her real identity. However, she never came. The reason was because on her way, her sickness suddenly took over, and she died before driving her car off a cliff. It was temporarily believed to be suicide, however, the fact that she had a present in her car for Hayato made it unlikely.
His father had Bianchi feed him her cooking whenever he played the piano. This made his playing terrible, but everyone who watched him believed it to be modern and unique. This scarred him though (and forever caused him to grow sick whenever he sees his sister's face), and he stopped playing the piano and instead focused on joining the Mafia.
He was considered a mere musician however, so no one wanted him, adding to the fact that he was also only partially Italian. So he worked on becoming stronger, asking Dr. Shamal for help since he looked up to him, wanting to learn his assassination technique. Instead, he taught him how to use bombs, which Hayato grew vastly interested in and even made them his main weapon, covering himself with bombs and earning himself the name "Hurricane/Smoking Bomb" since he was like a human explosive.
Then he found out around the age of eight that Lavina had been his real mother. He had been listening to a conversation between gossiping servants. He also heard that her death was set up by his father, and he ran away from home. He eventually heard about the Vongola, and about Tsuna being the destined Tenth, and traveled to Japan to "test his worthiness". When Tsuna saved him from dynamite that had gone out of the right path, he swore his loyalty to him.
One day people started getting attacked. Hayato was ranked third strongest in Nanimori Middle School at the time, and was also targeted. However, the one who was attacking, Chikusa, figured out that he was a member of the Vongola, and attacked Tsuna instead since he was with him. Hayato dived in the way of the attacked, become severely injured. He was eventually healed by Dr. Shamal.
He joined in on the assault of the Kokuyo Junior High Gang's base. However, he quickly became a liability because of the after-effects of Dr. Shamal's cure. Eventually Gokudera fought Chikusa once more, but because of his wounds the other member, Ken, attacked him from behind. He fell defeated but found Hibari in a cell behind him and managed to release him, giving him Dr. Shamal's cure for the Sakura-Kura Virus since it was affecting him. Later he was one of the one's possessed by Mukuro and forced to fight Tsuna, but was soon stopped by him.
Around a month later, Hayato, Tsuna and Yamamoto were attacked and defeated by Squalo from the Varia. They were told about the Vongola Rings, and he received half of the Vongola Storm Ring. Hayato set out to train, though Dr. Shamal refused to help him until he started hurting himself while training. He decided to help, but refused to heal his wounds. He came up with a new style for his bombs that he named Rocket Bombs.
He was set up to fight Varia's Belphegor inside of Nanimori Middle School. The two fought, each figuring out the other's techniques, but it turned out that explosives were set to go off after fifteen minutes had passed. The two ended up in a struggle for the ring in the library. Hayato was determined to get the Ring, but when Tsuna convinced him not to waste his life, he gave up.
The explosives went off, however, right after that. Both guardians managed to live through it, and Hayato stumbled out of the smoke and to the others. Later, during the battle for the Sky Ring, Hayato was given the cure to the poison by Hibari, and went with Takeshi to save Chrome. Mammon's illusions trapped them, however, they were saved by Ryohei.
They all gained the full Vongola Rings after forcing the Varia to surrender.
